The academy (then known as Mercy Baptist Academy) began in 1987 under the direction of James E. Rhodes, Senior Pastor and M.R.Hawley, Associate Pastor of Mercy Baptist Church to give “parents the choice of a proper learning environment as well as a Christian education for their child.” People have asked, “Why a Christian academy?” The answer was written by former youth pastor, Pastor R.J.Bush in our first yearbook of 1991-1992:
“In these days of educational decline, negative influences, and spiritual indifference, parents are confronted with a tremendous responsibility of rearing children. It is with that burden in mind that Mercy Baptist Academy was founded.”
In 1995 our KNIGHT’S basketball team played their first victory game in our newly constructed R.J.Bush Arts & Athletics Center gymnasium. And by 1999 through much prayer and fasting, even by some of the students, a love offering was given to install a wooden floor making the sports center a safer place to play.
Our 12-acre facility in Hanover Township, Burgettstown, PA, opened in 2000 to extend our ministry to children throughout the Ohio Valley, which is why our name became “Tri-State Christian Academy”.
Our purpose and aim is to have a right foundation for our students on which to build their lives. God has been so very good to us. Many lives have been forever changed. Some of our students are in full time service for our Lord. Others have become fine Christian laymen with outstanding testimonies both at their churches and at their jobs. The Kingdom of God is richer because of their love and contributions. May Tri-State Christian Academy always be a place of “higher” learning.
